The cows sing just like the fish in this ecologically overfed, magical-realism-enriched family story from Chile. Wastewater from a paper factory is poisoning the Rio Cruces. Rising from it at the very beginning of the movie is Magdalena, who died many years ago, dressed in a leather outfit and a biker helmet. As her husband sees her, he suffers a heart attack, which is why their daughter Cecilia must return home to take care of the family farm. Francisca Alegría’s contemplative tale is told in breathtaking images of collapse and rebirth.
