The “Bangui Hyenas”, a legendary three-man mercenary squad, escape Guinea-Bissau with a Mexican drug lord, only to find themselves in an eerie holiday camp full of suspicious characters in a remote region of Senegal. After the troubled past of their leader Chaka is revealed, dark forces unleash upon them. The Congolese director’s second feature is a supernatural gonzo thriller, influenced by spaghetti westerns and stories of Mexican cartels, yet rooted in African mythology and postcolonial reality. The mercenaries don’t only know how to use weapons, they quote Thomas Sankara and drop jokes in sign language: “Do we look like UNICEF!?”
Jean Luc Herbulot
was born and raised in Brazzaville, Congo, and studied in Paris. After working for the French television station TF1 as a graphic designer and establishing his own music video production company, he moved to Los Angeles and shot his first feature, Dealer (2014). He returned to Africa in 2017 and created, directed, and was the showrunner of Sakho & Mangane, the first French-language African TV series to be bought by Netflix. Saloum had its world premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. His next work, the action thriller Zero, is already in post-production.
