Destroy all Kaiju!!! A newly formed special unit of the Japanese government tries to save the island nation from a Kaiju threat. Just as all hope seems lost, a gigantic extraterrestrial being appears and throws himself into the fray. After Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman is the second reanimation of a tokusatsu legend from the mind of the duo Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi (Neon Genesis Evangelion). A loving tip of the hat to the classic Ultraman that warms our SLASH hearts with cute Kaiju, spectacular battles, and—as is customary for the genre—a whole lot of wonderful special effects.
Shinji Higuchi
entered the world of cinema through his involvement in special effects for Koji Hashimoto’s Godzilla (1984). Some thirty years later, he was to make his own version, Shin Godzilla (SLASH ½ 2017), for which he was awarded the Japan Academy Film Prize for Director of the Year. Major films in his directing career include Doomsday: The Sinking of Japan, which made over five billion yen at the domestic box office, The Floating Castle, and both parts of the manga adaptation Attack on Titan.
